What are Friedrich Nietzsche’s biggest contributions to political philosophy?
I think we are about to see how his analysis plays out. I read Will to Power and see that he is basing his views on human psychology and how this will be expressed in the two centuries following his writing, as a consequence of the demise of metaphysics.
As metaphysics loses its hold in an increasing way, there will no longer be a basis for the kind of morality that kept things travelling at the same equilibrium. All hell is already breaking lose, even now, and we are seeing extreme paranoia and other manifestations of fear and confusion.
Nietzsche thought that ultimately there must be a struggle of wits and of ‘will to power’, and that an entirely new sort of ‘aristocracy’ must develop, that would be based on the outcome of the forthcoming struggle to determine who is “the best” and has the right to rule.
Nietzsche thought it was necessary to allow a natural and inevitable divide to open up between those who had the wherewithal to maintain themselves in the face of great hostility from the masses, and the masses themselves. The latter would be increasingly ‘leveled down’ due to their defensive reliance on metaphysics. Those who could withstand a world and a worldview in the absence of metaphysics would become the inevitable leaders.
