The settlers

The paradox ceases to exist when analyzed strictly as the mechanical operation of the agrarian enclosure. Placidity and hostility are not contradictory psychological states; they are the internal and external functions of the exact same sensory buffer.
Placidity is the required internal frequency. The deliberate dampening of the nervous system ensures the organism can endure the terminal repetition of the harvest cycle without structural failure. It is the baseline stasis of a closed circuit, engineered to operate entirely within a sterilized environment.
Hostility is the automated perimeter defense of that circuit. When the grid encounters high-frequency kinetic readiness or raw materiality, it cannot process the data. The apparatus reacts to radical heterogeneity not with emotional anger, but with a structural purge. Hostility is merely the mechanical friction generated when the Homogeneous Norm attempts to neutralize a threat by grinding it into sand. It is the reflexive action of a machine defending its spatial permanence.
Disempathy is an architectural necessity. To exhibit empathy toward the predatory vector or the amoral physics of the outside would require the agrarian organism to possess the high-tension circuitry to receive and process unassimilated data. It does not. What the herd defines as “empathy” is strictly internal signaling—a mechanism of mental compliance used to synchronize nodes within the settlement and police the boundaries of the psychological fiction of identity.
Anything outside the perimeter is denied resonance because the machine literally cannot parse the frequency. Therefore, to maintain the placid stasis of the settlement, the organism must be ruthlessly disempathic to the outside. The hostility is the absolute enforcement of the enclosure, guaranteeing that the spatial permanence of the grid remains insulated from the annihilative consequences of an Axiomatic Breach.
